In the hustle and bustle of our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant rat race for success, productivity, and external validation. We often forget to hit the brakes and truly appreciate the beauty and blessings that surround us.
This is where slow living comes in – a movement that urges us to create a more balanced and meaningful way of life.
My journey towards slow living began after three years of a forced slow down battling chronic illness. I had been neglecting my own well-being in the pursuit of success, and I learned the hard way that I couldn’t keep it up if I wanted to stay well!
Now, I’m still a work in progress, but when I finally slowed down, I realized the true value of living a slower, more intentional life.
Join me on this journey….
What is Slow Living Exactly?
First things first: Slow living is all about slowing down the pace of life and taking a more deliberate approach to how we live each day. It’s about embracing a mindset that values quality over quantity and finding joy in the present moment.
No doubt, we all get caught up, always rushing from one thing to another, never really stopping to take a breath or look around us, but it’s not only ok to pause; it’s good for us!
I challenge all of us to find balance and create space for what truly matters – whether it’s spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies we enjoy, or simply enjoying a good book with a yummy cup of coffee….
It’s never too late to rewrite your own story…
Quick History of Slow Living
The roots of slow living can be traced back to the slow food movement that started in Italy – our Euro friends have always embraced more a chill life!
But, the idea of slow living really gained momentum after the pandemic hit as people found themselves forced to slow down and reassess their priorities.
The idea of a more intentional and balanced way of life became increasingly appealing after we all got a taste of it!
But…as the world came back, the rise of technology and artificial intelligence has created some confusion in our pursuit of slow living.
With constant notifications, endless distractions, and the pressure to always be connected, it has become even more challenging to embrace a slower pace.
But while it’s ever-growing in popularity, slow living is still often misunderstood….
What the Slow Living Lifestyle Really Means (Common Misconceptions!)
This lifestyle often gets misunderstood and over-dramatized. Let’s take a quick look some common misconceptions.
Slow living is not about being lazy or unproductive
Contrary to what many people think, slow living is not about being lazy or foolish with our time. It’s about prioritizing meaningful activities and finding fulfillment through mindful choices that can make us even more productive! Win-win!
Slow living doesn’t mean giving up technology
Don’t worry, slow living doesn’t mean giving up technology entirely. (I had you worried for a minute, didn’t I?) Instead, we need to recognize the role that technology plays in our lives and use it in a more mindful way. It’s all about finding a balance and using digital experiences to enhance our well-being, not detract!
Slow living is not only for the wealthy
This is an odd one, but I’ve heard this before… So, let’s debunk the myth that slow living is only for the wealthy. That couldn’t be further from the truth! Slow living is a lifestyle that is accessible to everyone, regardless of financial circumstances. I promise you can start streamlining your life without a big investment!
Slow living is only for small-town folks
You might associate slow living with those rural areas or small towns, where life seems to move at a slower pace. While it can be a bit easier to practice slow living in a peaceful countryside or a charming small town, it doesn’t mean that city dwellers or suburbanites can’t embrace this way of life.
Bottom line: Slow living is about prioritizing what truly matters
Slow living emphasizes simplicity, being present in the moment, and aligning our choices with our values to find contentment and deeper fulfillment. It’s about quality over quantity and embracing a more intentional way of living.

How To Get Started With Slow Living
Starting slow living means making time for what truly matters to you. It’s like finding your personal recipe for a more intentional life.
For me, that means doubling down on things like nature runs, quiet time, journaling, walks with my pups, and quality time with my hubs and close friends.
Even when life gets crazy, I try to keep my priorities straight, slow down, and soak in the experiences at my feet that day.
My advice? Make a list of what matters to you and prioritize it. It could be a weekly solo walk or family dinners together.
Remember, sometimes life gives us a wake-up call when we need it most. Slowing down allows room for God’s guidance, direction, and peace…
The Wrap- What is Slow Living?
So, here’s the bottom line: slow living isn’t about turning your life upside down overnight. You don’t have to sell everything in your house, meditate for hours each day, or toss your work calendar out the window in one fell swoop.
Instead, start small and make gradual, intentional changes that work for you. As you go along, you’ll find yourself realizing what adjustments are truly benefiting you and which ones just aren’t feasible.
I’m not an expert, just someone on this journey towards a slower, intentional life myself!
Remember, slow living is a personal journey. The whole point is to take it slow and not rush… you’ve got this.
I’m cheering you on!
